Robert Irwin on the literary and scientific life of Mediaeval Basra
By Ali Khadr
Robert Irwin explored Mediaeval Basra as part of this special appeal lecture, offering a vibrant tour of the literary and scientific culture of the city.
Irwin is the author of the autobiographical Memoirs of a Dervish (“It was in my first year at Oxford that I decided that I wanted to become a Muslim saint”), For Lust of Knowing: The Orientalists and their Enemies, a reply to Edward Said’s Orientalism; works on the Mamluk sultanate, the Alhambra, and The Arabian Nights; and six novels.
All the proceeds from the lecture went to BISI’s Appeal to re-train, re-equip and support cultural heritage professionals in Iraq.
