Origins of The New Basrah Museum
Held in memory of the late Dr Lamia Al-Gailani-Werr (1938-2019), a founding FOBM Trustee and BISI Honorary member and advisor, who played a pivotal role in the establishment and success of the new museum for Basra.

The webinar participants will discuss the origins of the new Basrah Museum through the project stakeholders and highlight how this important project in southern Iraq was completed with the cooperation and perseverance of Qahtan Alabeed, Director of Basra Antiquities and Heritage, with the support of the Iraq State Board of Antiquities and Basra Provincial Council. The UK Charity, the Friends of Basrah Museum (FOBM), was created in 2010 to bring about the establishment of the museum. The museum galleries were completed in March 2019 and funded in part by a Cultural Protection Fund grant. In October 2020, the FOBM charity merged with the BISI to continue fostering the work of the museum and its recently established library which will house the gift of the original BISI library and other donations. The webinar will include images of the new galleries and selected objects and will highlight key milestones in the ten-year project.
