Memorial Event for Dr Lamia Al-Gailani
The British Institute for the Study of Iraq and the Friends of Basrah Museum are proposing to organise jointly an event to remember and celebrate the remarkable life of Dr Lamia Al Gailani who passed away on 18th January in Amman. Lamia was very closely associated with both organisations. She was a lifelong supporter of BISI and was its only honorary lifetime member. She also received its Gertrude Bell Memorial Medal in 2009. She was a Trustee of the Friends of Basrah Museum since the inception of the organisation in 2010, and at the time of her death was keenly looking forward to the full opening of the museum in March of this year. Throughout her career, Lamia strove to protect and promote the cultural heritage of Iraq, particularly after the disasters of 2003, and it is for this that she will be chiefly remembered.
